Spermidine & Women's Health

Most longevity research was not designed with women in mind. Women were excluded from many clinical trials until the 1990s, and menopause research remains underfunded relative to how many people it affects. The result is that women are often asked to make decisions about their own aging from evidence that was gathered in men.

As a female-founded company, closing that gap is personal to us. It is one reason we pay close attention to the research that does exist.

The midlife transition

When hormones shift at midlife, several hallmarks of aging come forward. Spermidine supports autophagy, the quiet work of cellular renewal running beneath them all. Some of the most illuminating polyamine research of recent years is about women specifically, from ovarian aging to hormonal balance to being naturally present in breast milk.

01

Hormonal changes

Estrogen influences far more than reproduction. As levels fall through perimenopause, sleep becomes lighter and more fragmented, skin loses collagen density, bone turnover shifts, mood becomes less predictable, and energy dips. Hot flashes and night sweats get the attention, but these quieter changes are connected rather than separate, which is why they tend to arrive together.

02

Spermidine and hormonal balance

The research here is early, and it is encouraging. In one study, 30 days of spermidine supplementation was associated with a 37% increase in estradiol in women, a 58% reduction in cortisol, the body's main stress hormone, and an 88% increase in DHEA, sometimes called the youth hormone.

This is a single small study, larger trials are the next step, but a convincing signal for the potential of spermidine for hormonal health.

Spermidine is not an alternative to HRT, if you are on HRT or considering it, speak with your practitioner before adding spermidine to your protocol.

03

Deep, restorative sleep

Sleep disruption is among the most commonly reported changes of perimenopause, and it compounds everything else, since deep sleep is when tissue repair and the brain's overnight clearance concentrate. Research shows polyamines including spermidine influence the clock genes that regulate circadian rhythm, and better sleep is among the most frequently reported experiences with supplementation.

Vitality

Mitophagy clears out old and underperforming mitochondria, the structures that power every cell. When they underperform, energy flags. By supporting the renewal of healthy mitochondria, spermidine may help restore a sense of stamina, which is often what women mean when they say they want to feel like themselves again.

05

Cognition

The cognitive change many women describe through perimenopause is real and under-researched. Neurons depend on autophagy to clear misfolded proteins, and spermidine supports that process.

Spermidine and Fertility

Research published in Nature Aging in 2023 found that spermidine levels decline in aging ovaries, and that supplementation improved oocyte quality in aged mice by enhancing mitophagy, the renewal of mitochondria. It is one of the most striking findings in recent polyamine research.

Nature's own endorsement

Breast milk contains all three polyamines, spermidine, spermine, and putrescine, where they support a baby's gut development and immune system. Levels vary from mother to mother and even feed to feed, and research suggests a mother's diet influences them.

Milk for preterm babies runs richer in polyamines, exactly when the need is greatest. Long before longevity science took an interest, polyamines were part of how a human being gets built.
